Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIcehockey we are pleased to announce the 2014-2015 award winners:
Alexander Deitch scored three goals and had three assists and Max Guralnick added two goals and three assists as EEW breezed by Shawnee 9-2 in playoff action at Voorhees. Jesse Viggiano chipped in with a goal and two assists. EEW led 3-0 after one and 5-0 early into the second period and never looked back. Deitch scored the first two goals of the game at the six minute mark, both coming on the same shift. Michael Corkery made it 3-0 late in the period for EEW collecting his first goal of the year.
Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.
Jake Lukis scored his 15th goal of the season in the final minute of the third period as Riverfront rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie EEW at 2-2. Sam Amon and Max Guralnick scored goals in the opening five minutes to give the EEW a 2-0 lead. Riverfront closed the gap to 2-1late in the period with Sean Conard scoring his 14th goal of the season. After a scoreless second period which saw EEW killing off 6 penalties, including being down two men for a full two minutes, goalie Nick Mattioli was strong in nets to keep the lead at 2-1.
For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:
The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!
Sam Amon scored two power play goals to lead the EEW to a 5-1 win over Black Horse in National division action played at the Skate Zone on Monday night. Dominic Fonte opened the scoring for the EEW at the nine minute mark of the first period, getting his second of the year with Amon getting the assist. Less than three minutes later Rory Ohara would get his first goal of the year to give EEW a 2-0 lead after one. Amon would make it 3-0 at the five minute mark of the second with Black Horse down a man Amon connected with Jason Fisch getting the helper.
As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.
Jonathan Eisner scored the tying goal late in the second period as EEW played Cinnaminson to a 2-2 draw in JVA action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday night. Jeff Hernandez stopped 31 shots for the EEW and played a key role in the third period. Owen McNally gave the EEW a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game with Sean Cline getting the assist. Cinnaminson would get a power play goal from Geno Sambucci, his third of the season five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Liam McGurrin gave Cinnaminson a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second period but Eisner would get the equalizer in the final two minutes to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods.
