As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.
Rory O’Hara scored thirteen seconds into overtime as the Eastern Vikings defeated Kingsway 4-3 to win their Division Championship. Conor Riley paced the Vikings offense with three goals. In front of a standing room only crowd, Eastern scored the only goal of the first period with Riley getting the goal on a great pass from Maxim Kuznetsov. Kingsway tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period as Antonio Bene scored his first playoff goal. The Vikings would capitalize on the man advantage midway through the period as Riley connected for his second of the night and right before the horn went off to end the period, Kuznetsov won the offensive zone face-off and Riley’s shot from the point, through a screen found the net and a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Maxim Kuznetsov had a hat trick and Braden Hawcroft added two goals as Eastern defeated Kingsway 6-3 to force a deciding game in the double elimination tournament this coming Monday night at Voorhees. Kingsway led 2-0 in the first period on goals by Mike Moss and Matt Smith; Hawcroft scored a late goal in the period to make it 2-1 after one. Kuznetsov scored his first of the night on the power play early in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Dominick Fonte gave the Vikings their first lead of the night about ninety seconds later scoring an unassisted goal and it was 3-2.
The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. The teams traded goals in the first period with Riley giving Eastern a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game and Donahue tying the game in the final minute of the period, this one coming on the power play.
Mike Moss’s second goal of the game snapped a 4-4 game in the third period and gave Kingsway a 5-4 win in the SJHSHL double elimination tournament in the Tier I B division on Monday night. Having won 3 of 4 meetings during the regular season, Eastern was a slight favorite coming into tonight having averaged 9 goals per game in the three wins previous against Kingsway. Kevin Gillespie put Eastern up 1-0 in the opening five minutes of the game. Kingsway would tie the game at the ten minute mark as Moss would connect for his first goal of the night.
Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.
Joe Arlotta had three goals, Braden Hawcroft scored twice and Maxim Kuznetsov added two goals and two assists as Eastern defeated Lower Cape May 7-1 in the opening round of the double elimination tournament in the SJHSHL. Eastern wasted little time taking control as Arlotta scored in the opening ninety seconds, Just about two minutes later Hawcroft put home a rebound of a shot by Rory O’Hara and the lead was 2-0.
