The second period the Vikings got an early power play goal from Kouznetsov to make it 3-2 and then Kouznetsov fed the puck to Kristen Massanova three minutes later and we were tied at 3-3.
Jeremy Ambrose scored both goals including the game winner in overtime as Cherokee defeated Eastern 2-1 to win the SJHSHL Tier I Championship before another standing room only crowd at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Just like they did on Friday night the Chiefs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Ambrose deflected a shot by Hunter Ray just 16 seconds into the game. Unlike Friday night however Eastern came right back forty four seconds later as Max Kouznetsov would get the equalizer and we were all tied at 1-1. Little did we know that no more goals would be scored in regulation.
Jeremy Ambrose had two goals and one assist and Sam Libetti added a goal and one assist as Cherokee defeated Eastern 4-3 in front of a standing room only crowd on Friday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With fans lined up over one hour prior to the game, and many of them were not able to get in, the Chiefs needed this game to force a deciding game on Monday night. Eastern had gone through the tournament undefeated and needed just to win tonight to repeat as champs. Coach McKay needed a big effort from his top line and strong defense and he got both tonight.
In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey, we are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 award winners. We had many players that had a standout year which made it difficult to narrow down and in one category we actually picked two players to share the honors. Congratulations to all. The presentations will be prior to game 1 of the Championship round at Voorhees.
Three periods, two five minute overtime periods and 29 shooters and we were still tied before Jake Zuckerman stood alone at center ice with a chance to finally end the drama. Zuckerman, a defenseman, had just one goal on the season, back in December against Lower Cape May, and with offensive stalwarts like Max Kouznetsov and Conor Riley, you would not have guessed a defenseman would win the game for the Vikings. But after going through the first two rounds of the shootout, with each team getting one goal per round we were into the third round of shooters and Eastern had used every player, with Zuckerman being the last one left before we started over again.
