Eastern Vikings 2018-2019
Conor Riley capped off a brilliant career at Eastern scoring a hat trick on the biggest stage so far as Eastern defeated Delaware Military Academy 7-2 in the title game for the NJ/DE Flyers Cup with the game played at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday morning. Freshman goalie Max Brzozowski was strong in nets for the Vikings as they built a 4-0 lead. Jacob Findley opened the scoring as his shot from behind the net deflected off the goalies skate and into the net for a 1-0.

Eastern trailed 4-1 early into the second period, but staged a rally and defeated rival Cherokee 6-5 in the semi-final game in the Flyers Cup played at Voorhees. Coach Zuber would probably prefer his team not fall behind early, but it’s how you finish that counts. Just like the first round game against Township where they trailed by 4-0, Eastern kept working. Jeremy Ambrose would give Cherokee a 1-0 lead early in the game and a power play goal by Jake Frankenfield had the lead to 2-0 after one period. Connor Riley put the Vikings on the board early in the second period, but goals by Sam Berger and Dustin Patterson had the lead to 4-1.
Trailing 4-0 midway through the second period, things did not look good for Eastern, but to their credit they kept firing the puck, 42 shots in all and would chip away at the lead and with less than one minute left in overtime Kristopher Zapata would deposit the game winner past Matt Lynch and the Vikings would escape with a 5-4 win in the opening round of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. Jordan Stein led the Vikings with two goals. Township would build their lead initially taking advantage of the power play, as five minutes into the game Anthony Lonasco working behind the net, found CJ Castorina out front and his quick shot found the net and a 1-0 lead for Township.
Brian Cutler’s second goal of the night snapped a 3-3 tie and gave Cherry Hill East a 4-3 win over Eastern in JVA playoff action. East will move on to play Cherokee in the championship. The game was interesting as neither team would score in the opening period. And in the second period they would combine for six goals. Jordan Stein would give Cherry Hill a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second period. James Vona and Cutler would score the next two goals as East took a 2-1 lead.
Eight different players scored for Cherry Hill East as they skated past Eastern 8-3 in JVA action last night in Voorhees. With the win Cherry Hill improved to 13-1-1 and increased its first-place lead to three points over Moorestown. Sean Pomerania gave the Vikings their only lead of the night scoring six minutes into the opening period. Cherry Hill would respond scoring three goals in a spin of just over one minute. After Brian Cutler tied the game at 1-1, Connor Bryne and James Vona scored goals twenty seconds apart and Cherry Hill led 3-1.
We are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. The tradition continues here at SJIceHockey as we honor the best of 2018-2019 season in the SJHSHL. Listed below are this year’s recipients:
Harrison Rauh scored three goals and Andrew McGinley added two as Washington Township defeated Eastern 6-3 in the second round of the playoffs and eliminated the Vikings from contention. The first period was a scoring fest as the teams combined for seven goals. Sean Pomerantz opened the scoring for the Vikings as the freshman forward scored his first of two on the night to give Eastern a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game. Township would bounce back scoring two goals in less than one minute.
Luke Dobbs scored three minutes into overtime to give Moorestown a 3-2 win over Eastern in the opening round of the playoffs last night at Voorhees. After a scoreless first period, Kevin Wildish scored on the power play early in the second period to give Moorestown a 1-0 lead. That lead lasted less than one minute as Jacob Findley would tie the game at 1-1. Elias Sulpizio and Luke Riley would exchange goals three minutes apart and we were tied at 2-2 heading into the third period.
Jake Frankenfield scored eighteen seconds into overtime to give Team Simmonds a 5-4 win over Team Giroux in the Junior-Senior showcase game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Frankenfield had two goals on the night and won the game’s MVP, donated and presented by Training Aspects Ki Vaks and Rob Jost. Team Giroux took a 2-0n lead on goals by Austin Wilk and Sam Libetti. Team Simmonds would respond with goals from Ryan Feist late in the first period and seconds later a tying goal by Anthony Poppalardo. Team Simmonds would take a 3-2 lead as Mike Liberty from Mainland would score in the second period.
Washington Township battled back from a 4-0 deficit only to surrender two late goals to Eastern and lose 6-4 in the regular season finale for both teams. The Vikings dominated the first period launching twenty shots and scoring three goals. First Anthony Tropea scored fifty three seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Goals by Constantine Roustas and a short-handed goal by Jacob Findley had the lead to 3-0 after one. Kristopher Zappata scored on the power play four minutes into the second period to push the lead to 4-0. Mike Guarracino would put Township on the board twenty seven seconds later to give them some life at 4-1.
