Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIcehockey we are pleased to announce the 2014-2015 award winners:
Travis Tuthill scored three goals in a span of two minutes as Egg Harbor Township rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the final minutes to defeat Clearview III 5-4 in the playoff opener for both team. Jake Sholders had a hat trick for Clearview. The teams exchanged goals in the opening period with Devon Swisher giving EHT a 1-0 lead and less than one minute later Sholders tied the score at 1-1. The View would take a 3-1 lead scoring two goals less than one minute apart in the second period. Sholders connected on the power play as he put home a rebound of a shot by Nat Smith and Smith and Sholders would connect on the same shift for a 3-1 lead.
Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.
For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:
The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!
As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.
Dylan Richardson had a hat trick and Mike O’Brien, Dan Grace and Andrew Kostic each scored twice as Cinnaminson had little trouble with Egg Harbor Township winning 11-2. Cinnaminson would score their goals in bunches, to open the scoring Richardson and Andrew Fehr scored goals thirty four seconds apart midway through the first for a 2-0 lead. And forty seconds later O’Brien made it 3-0 scoring an unassisted goal. EHT got a goal from DJ Haney, his second of the season to make it 3-1, but James Lowry scored in the final minutes to give Cinnaminson a 4-1 lead.
Matt Smith had three goals and Kingsway snapped a 5-5 game early in the third period on their way to a 7-5 win over EHT. Smith opened the scoring just fourteen seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. EHT would tie the score at 1-1 as Phil Kovalesky scored his second of the season. Smith gave Kingsway a 2-1 lead late in the period and that lead grew to 4-1 on goals by Donovan Shannon and Anthony Alestra midway through the second period. And when Hunter Kramer scored at the eleven minute mark for a 5-1 lead, Kingsway seemed to be in control.
