2016-2017 JVB Champions
While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

Jona Carmany and Darren Hewitt each had a hat trick as Egg Harbor Township defeated Cherokee 8-3 in the JVB Championship. Cherokee led 2-0 in the first four minutes of the game on goals by Patrick Dugan and Ryan Deangelis. Jacob Feliciano got things going for EHT scoring at the eleven minute mark, less than two minutes later we were tied at 2-2 on the first of three by Carmany. Hewitt scored on the power play with one second left in the period and EHT took a 3-2 lead after one.
The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Here's the full list and seeding for this year's Flyers Cup.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:
Mike Moss broke a 2-2 game with ten minutes left in the game as Team Simmonds edged Team Giroux 3-2 in last night’s Junior/Senior Showcase game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having participated in the last few drafts Coach McKay has never won in this format, and while he wouldn’t admit that it bothered him, I got to believe that the success he has enjoyed over the last 8 years, not winning this game was probably bothering him to a degree. Trailing 2-0 on goals by Kevin Troy of St Joe’s and Zachary Faust of Black Horse, Team Simmonds would get a late goal in the period as Cody Charyk from Shawnee would score with Moss and Vinny Salerno getting the assists.
Adam Notaro stopped 50 shots and Egg Harbor Township rallied from a 3-0 first period deficit to tie Clearview 3-3 in early game action at Hollydell. The View started quickly as most of the first period was spent in the Egg Harbor zone with 20 of the 53 total shots launched in the opening 15 minutes. Chase Dyar opened the scoring just bovver three minutes into the game and just about one minute later Derek McKinley had the lead to 2-0 getting his second goal of the season. Leading scorer Nick Ramos would score his 23rd of the season, this one on the power play, on a nice feed from Robert Penrod in the final seconds of the period and the lead was 3-0.
This past Thursday night the SJHSHL held its Junior/Senior Showcase draft with Team Giroux selected by Coach Popiolek from Black Horse and Coach Busler from Cherry Hill East and making the selections for Team Simmonds were Coach McKay from Cherokee and Coach Vulpio from Clearview. We tossed a coin to see who would get first pick and Team Simmonds won the toss and selected Nick Ramos, Team Giroux would select Zachary Faust with their first pick. The forwards were chosen first, total of 12, followed by 6 defenseman each team, then 3 alternates each team and finally the goalies. Here are the rosters:
Bryan Knaust scored three goals and Zach Stoor added two as HLV defeated Egg Harbor Township 9-3 in the early game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. It took a while before the HLV offense got going but with just under six minutes remaining in the period Stoor gave HLV a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Matt Saavas scored an unassisted goal and the lead was 2-0. EHT would capitalize on the man advantage to tie the game; first Zach Feliciano would score on the power play late in the period to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The list of nominees from each SJHSHL team has been announced for the Junior/Senior Showcase game to be played on January 31st at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Each team will have 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In addition, 3 alternates will be chosen in the event a player selected cannot make the game. The league will conduct a live draft streamed on SJIceHockey.com at a date to be announced. Here are the nominees:
Eastern wasted little time taking control of the game scoring just thirty nine seconds into the opening period one of eight goals in the period as they defeated Egg Harbor Township 12-2 on Monday night at the Skate Zone. Maxim Kuznetsov had three goals and two assists, and Braden Hawcroft added a goal and five assists as Eastern had nine different players register at least one point. Dominic Fonte and Jacob Findley each scored two goals. Dennis Haney and Christian Raymond scored the EHT goals.
