With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

Max Ramos stopped all 22 shots as Clearview defeated HLV 3-0 and advanced to the finals in Tier II and will face Black Horse on Monday night at Voorhees. Led by the strong play of senior defenseman Tyler Richardson and the tenacity of the smallest player on the ice Anthony Dellerose, the View played solid defense and when there was a breakdown, Ramos was there to shut the door. Late in the first period HLV was on the power play and Colin Riera found himself all alone down low, but Ramos stoned him to keep it scoreless. Later in the period Mike Cullen broke down and his shot from the slot was stopped by Doug Henkel, but Mason Gagne kept the play alive and Trevor Smolsky was there to put home the rebound and his second goal of the playoffs gave Clearview a 1-0 lead.

With the playoffs winding down and another season coming to an end, here are some predictions on who might win their respective Titles: Tier I teams are already set-Moorestown and Cherokee. During the regular season Cherokee had a 2-1-1 edge, but Moorestown has won the last 2 in including a 5-4 win last Friday. The key will be containing Brian Miller, in the season opener Miller went off for 6 goals. Over the next four meetings he has been held to just one goal total, so he has Moorestown’s attention when he is on the ice. The teams are pretty even overall, offensively Cherokee averages about .50 goals more per game, but defensively Moorestown has a slight edge.
