Brandon Balsama scored two goals as Washington Township defeated HLV 5-1 and advanced to the semi-finals in the NJ/DE Flyers Cup against Salesianum. After coming off an emotional night on Monday in defeating Clearview for the Tier I Title, Township started off with 17 shots in the first period but no goals. Early in the second period, Balsama broke in and lifted a shot into the short side for a 1-0 lead. Not known as a scorer, defenseman Eric Sailor blasted a shot from the point that found its way into the net for a 2-0 lead. Sailor, who played a solid game defensively, scored just one goal all season, and you guessed it, against HLV. Nick Urban made it 3-0 midway through the period and Township was in control.

Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. Christopher Kilcourse scored at the two minute mark of the first overtime as Black Horse defeated HLV 5-4 in the playoff opener for both teams. Black Horse trailed most of the third period until Scott Veneziale scored with twenty seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Brandon Graham led the offense with two goals and Sam Belanger netted two for HLV.

Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.

For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:

The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!

Nick Ramos’ second goal of the game with forty eight seconds left in the third period allowed Clearview to earn a 3-3 tie against HLV. Despite dominating the game offensively in shots 39-12, Clearview trailed 3-1 late into the second period. The View took the lead early in the first period as James Summers scored his seventh goal of the year to make it 1-0. HLV would tie the game at 1-1 as Sam Belanger scored his 16th of the season just about four minutes later.

Washington Township scored four goals in the second period as they pulled away from HLV 7-1 to win their first game of 2015. Donovan Haslett led the offense with two goals and one assist, Chris Cozzan added a goal and two assists. After a scoreless first period Township would score three goals in the opening three minutes of the second period. Haslett got them going scoring his 4th of the year with Cozzan and Sam Strippoli getting the assists. Just over one minute later Jimmy Pollock gave Township a 2-0 lead scoring his sixth of the season. Strippoli made it 3-0 with Cozzan getting the helper.

As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.

Cody Roescher scored two goals and Drew Murtha converted on a penalty shot as Williamstown defeated HLV 5-2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After a scoreless first period, Murtha was awarded a penalty shot in the first two minutes of the second period and converted to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Ron Randall would score an unassisted goal with four minutes left in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Goals by Roescher and Collin Miller ninety seconds apart put Williamstown ahead at 3-1 after two periods.
