HLV Articles 2015-16

As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.

The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. Kenny Weightman scored three goals, including the game winner with just over two minutes left as Middle Township rallied from a two goal deficit to upset HLV 7-6 in playoff action at the Igloo. The win kept alive the Panthers season and they will now move on to play top seed Cherry Hill. Middle Township launched a team playoff record 47 shots while keeping the offensive pressure on most of the night realizing the lose and go home consequence.

Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.

The SJHSHL will hold the Junior/Senior Showcase game this Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30PM at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Admission is $5. The live draft was conducted last Thursday and 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies were selected for each team. Also 3 alternates were selected in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. So please come out and support these players. Here are the rosters of the two teams:

Alec Warner had three goals as HLV defeated Middle Township 5-1 in Tier II action played in Voorhees on Monday night. HLV jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game on goals by Warner and Ryan Lasalvia fifteen seconds apart. Kenny Weightman would score his 23rd of the season for Middle Township at the eight minute mark to make it 2-1.

Justin Bryan scored twice and Kris Hastings had four assists as Cherry Hill East defeated HLV 6-2 in action played in Voorhees. HLV led 1-0 after the first period on a power play goal by Justin Vadino. Goals by Bryan and David Cutler in the first five minutes of the second period gave East a 2-1 lead. East had its offense going as they were credited with 44 shots on goal. Patrick Hoffman would give HLV some offense of their own as his eighth goal of the season tied the score at 2-2 with just under six minutes left in the second period.

Nick Frangos scored two goals and assisted on two others as St. Joe’s defeated Riverfront 5-2 in action played at Hollydell. Riverfront is still seeking their first win of the season. In just his third game back with St. Joes Frangos made his presence felt on the ice creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Kevin Troy opened the scoring on a feed from Frangos to make it 1-0 early in the first period. Sean Conard would tie the game at 1-1 on a nice pass from Reginald Hunter.

Cherry Hill spotted HLV a two goal lead and came roaring back to score four unanswered goals as they defeated HLV 4-2 in a battle of the two top teams in the B division of Tier II. The win was the seventh in a row for East. Bryan Knaust and Nick DelPrato scored goals in the first nine minutes of the game to give HLV a 2-0 lead. Andrew Bowen would score the first of his two on the night, this one coming on the power play late in the period with Kristopher Hastings getting the assist and the lead was down to 2-1 after one.
