Matt Smith scored two goals, including his second straight game winner, this one coming with five minutes left in the game as Kingsway defeated Egg Harbor Township 7-6 and stayed alive in the double elimination tournament. Christian Raymond scored all six goals for EHT. Dom Salerno and Mike Moss added two goals each for Kingsway. The game was a seesaw affair with EHT taking a 3-2 lead after one on three goals by Raymond and Kingsway getting goals from Moss and Salerno.
Matt Smith tied the game at 4-4 with one minute left in regulation, then won the game in overtime scoring with just seconds remaining in the first overtime as Kingsway defeated Lower Cape May 5-4 in playoff action at Hollydell. Kingsway will move on to play Egg Harbor Township. Lower Cape built a 4-1 lead on two goals from Joe Smith and one by Brian Moss and one by Tom Smith. Kevin Carr had the only goal for Kingsway, his coming late in the second period. With a three goal lead heading into the third period, Lower Cape seemed on their way to a win, but an early power play goal by Dom Salerno gave Kingsway a pulse at 4-2.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIcehockey we are pleased to announce the 2014-2015 award winners:
Kingsway got two goals each from Matt Smith and Dom Salerno as they defeated Clearview III 5-3 in Olympic playoff action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The loss ended the season for Clearview III. The View jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Mike DeFelice in the opening minutes and one by Connor Ennis at the eight minute mark. Kingsway would get goals from Salerno and Smith in the final two minutes to tie the game at 2-2 after one period.
Colin Blackley scored three goals and Ryan Hill added two as Lower Cape May breezed by Kingsway 7-1 in the playoff opener for both teams. Jared Sweeten stopped 18 shots and lost his shutout bid in the final three minutes of the game. Justin Tomlin and Hill scored goals in the opening period to give Lower Cape a 2-0 lead. Blackley scored his first of the game just twenty four seconds into the second period for a 3-0 lead. Pete Tomlin and Blackley scored goals forty one seconds apart to make it 5-0 after two periods.
Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.
Andrew Spuhler had two goals and one assist as Clearview III defeated Kingsway 4-2 in Olympic action at Hollydell. After Kingsway took a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Dom Salerno the first of his two on the night, Brandon Gilliam would connect on the power play, one of three power play goals the View would score on the night. Gilliam’s third goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 and four minutes later the View would take advantage with the man advantage. Joey Freda would score his sixth of the year and the View led 2-1.
For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:
Jake Sholders scored two third period goals, the last one coming with two minutes left in the game as Clearview III rallied from a 6-3 deficit to tie Kingsway 6-6 in early Olympic action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Michael Moss led the Kingsway attack with three goals. Kingsway built a 4-2 lead after one period on two goals by Moss and a power play goal by Kevin Carr in the final thirty seconds and Matt Smith’s 13th of the season. Clearview goals were scored by Dave Fadini and the first of two on the night for Joey Freda.
