Thomas Beeby stopped 26 shots for the win. Lower Cape led 3-1 after the first period with Hill scoring the first two goals of the game in the opening eight minutes. Matt Smith tied the game at 4-4 with one minute left in regulation, then won the game in overtime scoring with just seconds remaining in the first overtime as Kingsway defeated Lower Cape May 5-4 in playoff action at Hollydell. Kingsway will move on to play Egg Harbor Township. Lower Cape built a 4-1 lead on two goals from Joe Smith and one by Brian Moss and one by Tom Smith. Kevin Carr had the only goal for Kingsway, his coming late in the second period. With a three goal lead heading into the third period, Lower Cape seemed on their way to a win, but an early power play goal by Dom Salerno gave Kingsway a pulse at 4-2.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIcehockey we are pleased to announce the 2014-2015 award winners:
Colin Blackley scored three goals and Ryan Hill added two as Lower Cape May breezed by Kingsway 7-1 in the playoff opener for both teams. Jared Sweeten stopped 18 shots and lost his shutout bid in the final three minutes of the game. Justin Tomlin and Hill scored goals in the opening period to give Lower Cape a 2-0 lead. Blackley scored his first of the game just twenty four seconds into the second period for a 3-0 lead. Pete Tomlin and Blackley scored goals forty one seconds apart to make it 5-0 after two periods.
Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.
For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:
The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!
As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.
Trevor Rucci scored four goals and Tom Grzegorski added two as St Joe’s rolled over Lower Cape May 11-2 in Olympic play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With the win St Joe’s improved to 9-1 on the season. St Joe’s took control early scoring five goals in the opening period and never looked back. Grzegorski got things going in the opening minute scoring a goal with Nick Yuhas getting the helper. Rucci would get his first of the night on the power play at the five minute mark and seconds later Alex Eberly scored and it was 3-0. Goals by Rucci and Tristen Ridarelli had the lead to 5-0 after one.
