Lower Cape May Articles 2015-2016
As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.

The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. Here are the teams nominated along with their seeding:
Maxim Kuznetsov and Conor Riley scored two goals each as Eastern defeated Lower Cape May 7-4 to stay alive in the SJHSHL double elimination tournament. Lower Cape had its season come to an end with the loss. Cole Blackley and Colin Donahue each scored twice for Lower Cape. The teams traded goals in the first period with Riley giving Eastern a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game and Donahue tying the game in the final minute of the period, this one coming on the power play.
Colin Donahue scored all three goals as Lower Cape May ended the season for Williamstown with a 3-0 win at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Donahue scored the only goal of the first period at the eight minute mark with Kadin Donahue getting the assist. Jared Sweeten would stop all 29 shots for Lower Cape and Williamstown failed to capitalize on the man advantage as they were 0-4 on the power play.
Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.
Joe Arlotta had three goals, Braden Hawcroft scored twice and Maxim Kuznetsov added two goals and two assists as Eastern defeated Lower Cape May 7-1 in the opening round of the double elimination tournament in the SJHSHL. Eastern wasted little time taking control as Arlotta scored in the opening ninety seconds, Just about two minutes later Hawcroft put home a rebound of a shot by Rory O’Hara and the lead was 2-0. Arlotta scored his second of the night just thirteen seconds into the second period and the Vikings enjoyed a 3-0 lead.
The SJHSHL will hold the Junior/Senior Showcase game this Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30PM at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Admission is $5. The live draft was conducted last Thursday and 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies were selected for each team. Also 3 alternates were selected in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. So please come out and support these players. Here are the rosters of the two teams:
On the heels of being selected for the Junior/Senior Showcase game next Wednesday, Jared Sweeten had his best performance of the season as he stopped 43 of the 47 shots he faced to help Lower Cape May force a 4-4 tie on action played at Hollydell on Friday night. Colin Donahue paced the offense with two goals. Kingsway dominated the first period out-shooting Lower Cape 19-1, and except for two late goals in the final two minutes, Sweeten stood tall in nets. Trailing 2-0, Lower Cape capitalized on the power play as Donahue would convert on a feed from Joshua Meyer, his first of two assists on the night for Meyer along with a strong game on defense.
The SJHSHL will hold the Junior/Senior Showcase game on Wednesday February 3rd at 8:30 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. There will be a live draft on Thursday January 28th at 7:00 on our web site announcing the selections. There will be 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies selected for each team. Also 3 alternates will be picked in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. Please come out on Wednesday night and support these players. Kenny Weightman scored with four seconds left in the game to snap a 3-3 tie and give Middle Township a thrilling 4-3 victory over Lower Cape May. The win was the second in the last three games for the Panthers. Weightman accounted for all the goals for Middle Township and now has 21 on the season to lead his club. Middle Township scored the first two goals of the game with Weightman making it 1-0 at the four minute mark and ninety seconds later he made it 2-0 with Jake Simone getting the assist. Ryan Hill got Lower Cape on the scoreboard at the six minute mark and we headed into the second period with the Panthers up 2-1.
