2015-2016 Tier IIA Champions
As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.

After three periods, two five minute overtimes and 9 chances during a shootout Mainland and Cinnaminson were still tied as Gage Grist skated to the puck at center ice, he being the last shooter and he beat Cinnaminson net minder Stephen SanMartin for the game winning goal as Mainland won 7-6 in a thriller before a packed house at Hollydell. Mainland carried much of the play through the first two periods out-shooting Cinnaminson 29-9 but as usual the case was trailing. Jake Gimbel scored the only goal of the first period as Cinnaminson led 1-0. James Lowry would make it 2-0 in the opening minute of the second period scoring on a breakaway. The lead grew to 3-0 five minutes later as Lowry would get his second of the night, again on a breakaway and Cinnaminson led 3-0.
James Lowry scored three goals, two in the third period as Cinnaminson defeated Mainland 6-5 to force a deciding game in the double elimination tournament in Tier II in the SJHSHL. Mickenzie Restle led Mainland with two goals. The teams traded goals in the opening period which ended 3-3. Cinnaminson got goals from Lowry, Alex Richardson and Jordan Evans. Scoring for Mainland were Restle, Brad Kienzle and Jacob Graziotto. Mainland would get goals from Robert Lemons and Restle less than two minutes apart to jump ahead 5-3. Andrew Fehr would score a late goal for Cinnaminson to cut the lead to 5-4 after two periods.
The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. Here are the teams nominated along with their seeding:
Robert Lemons scored three goals and Mickenzie Restle added two goals and two assists as Mainland defeated St Joe’s 10-0 in the double elimination tournament opener for both teams at Hollydell. Nathan Harring also set up four goals as Mainland took advantage of St Joe’s who were missing three of their top four scorers and failed to generate much offense, as they were out-shot 37-7. Lemons opened the scoring five minutes into the game on some hard work done by Harring as he hustled to keep the puck alive and Lemons buried his pass for a 1-0 lead.
Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.

Nicholas Pontoriero stopped 38 shots and five different players scored to give Riverfront a 5-2 win over Mainland. The win was the first of the year for Riverfront and three goals in the third period would provide the spark along with the performance of Pontoriero. Patrick Willever scored a power play goal at the five minute mark to give Riverfront a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Daniel Taylor would score his second of the season and a 2-0 lead. Mainland would get on the board late in the period as Gajge Hopkins scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-1 after one period.
Robert Penrod’s second goal of the night with less than four minutes left in the game snapped a 4-4 tie and gave Clearview a 5-4 win over Mainland. The View jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Penrod and Joshua Tabar, as Mainland seemed a bit sluggish to start the game. The second period began with Clearview on the power play and a chance to build on their lead, but it was Mainland that responded scoring two short-handed goals. First Gage Grist intercepted a pass and scored on a break to make it 2-1 then just over one minute later, Brendan Blight would tie the game at 2-2 and suddenly Mainland had a jump in their step.
