Mainland Articles 2017-2018
In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey, we are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 award winners. We had many players that had a standout year which made it difficult to narrow down and in one category we actually picked two players to share the honors. Congratulations to all. The presentations will be prior to game 1 of the Championship round at Voorhees.

Luke Steele had a hat trick as Cherry Hill East defeated Mainland 10-0 in the Tier II double elimination tournament game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Cherry Hill jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Calvin Aliferov, Eric First and Ethan Chase. Mainland could only muster 12 shots for the game and would have two power play opportunities but goalie Luke Martini kept them off the board. Two goals by Steele in the second period and pone by Callum Scott had East ahead 6-0 after two.
Anthony Santa Maria scored his second goal of the game two minutes into the second overtime as Mainland defeated Riverfront 5-4 in an opening round playoff game played at Hollydell on Friday night. Gavin Dierkhising scored all four Riverfront goals. Gage Grist added a hat trick for Mainland. Santa Maria opened the scoring in the first period just over one minute into the game. Just about one minute later Dierkhising would tie the game at 1-1, getting his first of four. Grist would give Mainland a 2-1 lead at the eleven minute mark and would add a short-handed breakaway with one second left in the period and Mainland took a 3-1 lead into the second period.
Shawnee is making its first appearance in recent memory and Moorestown finds itself the top seed after a 15-1-2 season. The games are scheduled to be played starting on March 12th as Cherokee will host DMA at 8:45 at Voorhees Skate Zone. Moorestown will begin play on Tuesday March 13th at Voorhees at 7:00. Kyle Peters scored one minute into the overtime period as Team Simmonds rallied from a three goal deficit to defeat Team Giroux 9-8 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Max Kuznetsov led Team Giroux with six goals. Dominic Garrozzo had three goals and four assists and Kyle Peters added a hat trick for Team Simmonds. Luke Dobbs opened the scoring giving Team Giroux the early 1-0 lead. Dennis Campbell tied the game at 1-1 at the five minute mark.
Gage Grist scored twice, including the game tying goal late in the second period as Mainland rallied from a two goal deficit to earn tie with St Joe’s at 4-4. Kevin Glass led St Joe’s with a hat trick. St Joe’s took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game as Joseph Bryant scored his 6th of the season. Mainland would tie the game at 1-1 just less than three minutes later with Anthony Santa Maria getting his 18th of the season. Glass would score the next three goals in a span of about five minutes to give St Joe’s a 4-1 lead.
The 2017-2018 SJHSHL draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game was conducted on Tuesday night as the coaches for Team Simmonds and Team Giroux gathered to make their selections. Team Giroux, who will be coached by Daryl Sporer from Moorestown and assisted by Scott Busler from Cherry Hill East won the toss and selected Max Kuznetsov from Eastern with their first pick. Team Simmonds who will be coached by Scott McKay from Cherokee and assisted by John Francis from Kingsway selected Dominic Garrozzo from Washington Township. Here are the remaining selections for both teams:
Colin Hughes scored two goals and Matthew Dalonzo stopped all 24 shots as Clearview defeated Mainland 4-0 in Tier II play at Voorhees on Monday night. The View took control of the game in the first period scoring three goals, with Hughes getting things started just over one minute into the game. Luc Froio would make it 2-0 getting his fourth of the year at the eight minute mark. Chase Dyar gave the View a 3-0 lead in the final minute of the period.
The nominees for the 2017-2018 Junior/Senior Showcase game have been released. The game will be played on Wednesday, February 7th at the Voorhees Skate Zone at 7:05. Tickets are $5. Head coach from Moorestown will team with head coach from Cherry Hill East to oppose head coach from Cherokee who will team with head coach from Kingsway. We will conduct a live draft next week-date and time to be announced so stay tuned. Here are your 2017-2018 nominees...
David Cutler scored three goals and Nicholas Carr added two as Cherry Hill East scored four goals in the first period as they defeated Mainland 6-3 in Tier II action in Voorhees on Monday evening. Cutler scored right after the opening face-off for a 1-0 lead. Just over one minute later Carr would get his first of the night and less than two minutes in East led 2-0. Cutler would make it 3-0 at the four minute mark and three minutes later Carr had his second and East led 4-0.
