Sean Conard and Tristan Tilghman each scored twice and Riverfront used a four goal second period to defeat Middle Township in Olympic playoff action at the Skate Zone. After a scoreless first period Tilghman and Conard scored four minutes apart in the middle stanza to give Riverfront a 2-0 lead. Later in the period goals by Tilghman and Isaac Viereck doubled the lead to 4-0 with Viereck scoring in the final seven seconds.
Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.
For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:
Shawnee used a three goal second period to break a 1-1 game and propel Shawnee to a 4-1 win over Middle Township. The teams traded goals in the first period with Gavin Seddon giving Middle Township a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. Alex Churchill would tie the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season. Ryley Bergeson would score the eventual game winner early in the second period.
The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!
Riverfront used a five goal second period to pull away from Middle Township 10-1 and increased its lead over St Joe’s to four points in the Olympic division. Isaac Viereck and Dylan Farnan each scored two goals to pace Riverfront and six different players’ added goals as Riverfront continues to get balanced scoring, as they have 6 players with eight or more goals on the season. Offensively they are averaging over 8 goals per game and surrendering less than 3 per game. Alex Mayernick started the scoring at the three minute mark of the first period scoring unassisted. Viereck would add the next two for a 3-0 lead after one period.
As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.
Kingsway battled Middle Township all night long, led by five goals by Mike Moss, three short-handed, as the teams played to an 8-8 final. Anthony TJ Albano led Middle Township with a hat trick and Thom De Marco added two goals. Moss opened the scoring with a short-handed goal four minutes in. Albano would tie the game seconds later on the same power play. Charlie De Marco gave Middle Township a 2-1 lead late in the period. Early in the second period Marc Conte would notch his second goal of the year to give Middle Township a 3-1 advantage. Moss however would get his second shorthanded goal of the evening, this time his team was down two men and Kingsway got to within 3-2.
Thom DeMarco scored two goals and Middle Township used a three goal third period to pull away from Clearview III 5-3 in Olympic division action played at Hollydell on Friday night. With the win Middle Township improved to 6-0-1. Anthony Albano scored the only goal of the first period five minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Kaisinger would get his fourth goal of the season in the opening minute of the second period to knot the game at 1-1.DeMarco got his first of the night scoring on a breakaway to give Middle Township a 2-1 lead at the five minute mark. Clearview would tie the game at 2-2 in the final minute with Kaisinger scoring his second of the night.
