Moorestown Quakers Articles 2008-09
Moorestown was forced to play without two of their top players and also was missing two others due to injury, in suffering a 7-2 loss to Unionville. Austin Curtis scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Unionville attack. Also Amy Donovan scored the last goal becoming the first female to score a goal in Flyers Cup History (we believe). With Unionville leading 2-0 after one period and having out-shot the Quakers 14-6, Moorestown began to generate some offense in the second period, launching 17 shots. Unfortunately Stephen Kelly, the Unionville goalie was outstanding and kept Moorestown off the board while Zack Emery and Curtis were able to beat Moorestown goalie Craig Rushmore.

The Moorestown Quakers got two goals each from Alec Nicolai and Mike Eni as they defeated Cherokee 7-6 in the Championship game last night at Pennsauken. In control most of the way Moorestown had two four goal leads, and did an outstanding job defensively on All-Star forward Frank Garvey, limiting to one goal late in the game. The win gave Moorestown its first ever Championship in the SJHSIHL. From the first period Moorestown was in control, scoring four goals. Nicolai gave Moorestown a 1-0 lead putting home a rebound of a shot by Alex Hashmi.
Alec Nicolai scored twice and Ryan Volosin scored once as Moorestown JVA edged Cherokee JVA 3-2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday night. All the goals were special teams’ goals, with four power play goals and one short-handed goal. Cherokee scored the lone goal of the first period as Brandon Nilson, who scored both of the goals, took advantage of the extra attacker with Anthony Williams and Josh Westrom getting the assists. Moorestown did all their scoring in the second period.
Fast starts are is usually what defines a Cherokee big game, but tonight Moorestown scored twice in the opening two minutes and never looked back as they defeated Cherokee 8-3 in the last game in the winners bracket. Moorestown is now in the driver’s seat and will have to wait until next Monday before they play another game. Shawnee will play Washington Township on Wednesday night at 8:30 at Voorhees, and the winner of that game will play Cherokee on Friday, at a rink to be announced. Whomever wins Friday will have to beat Moorestown twice in order to become the champion, a tough task just to win one, but two??
Don’t look now but the hottest team in the league, Moorestown is charging into the playoffs after handling Shawnee 5-2 at the Igloo. Ben Smith led the attack scoring twice. With the win Moorestown clinched first place in the North Division. Shawnee failed to capitalize on the power play as they were 0-6 with the man advantage and could only muster two shots on a two man advantage they had for a full two minutes early in the third period. Smith scored the only goal of the first period as he picked up a loose puck at the blue line and fired a shot that beat Alex Crespo. Smith made it 2-0 early in the second period, but Joe Crespo scored on a breakaway to cut the lead to 2-1.
Alex Hashmi netted a hat trick and Ben Smith added two goals as Moorestown defeated Cherokee 8-5 at Voorhees handing Cherokee its first loss of the season. Pat Casey led Cherokee with two goals. Moorestown took the ice with a purpose tonight, not only to knock off Cherokee, but to prove they were a force to be reckoned with. Early on they controlled the play, but it was Cherokee that opened the scoring on the power play as Casey scored from the point at the eight minute mark. Just a little over two minutes later, Hashmi got his first goal to tie the score after one period.
Mike Nigro scored four goals as Washington Township defeated Moorestown 8-2 in the late game at Voorhees on Monday night. Fellow line mates Matt Fleekop with one goal and four assists and Eddie Sarin with a goal and two assists helped Township win its tenth game of the season. Mike Eni and Alex Hashmi scored the Moorestown goals. Township led 3-1 after the first period on goals by Nigro, Fleekop and Jonathan Paulo, with Paulo scoring in the final seconds for a two goal lead.

After a scoreless second period, Eni scored early in the third period and the lead grew to 4-0. Mike Lukis scored on the power play for Holy Cross at the nine minute mark to ruin the shutout to make it 4-1.
