Moorestown Quakers Articles 2009-10
Alec Nicolai scored twice as Moorestown defeated Holy Cross 5-3 in the Title game last night at the Igloo. In front of a standing room only crowd Holy Cross broke through first scoring short-handed as Ryan Badger scored a wrap around goal against Craig Rushmore. Nicolai tied the game about four minutes later as he banged home his shot just under the crossbar. Twenty-two seconds later Tyler Woyshner gave Moorestown the lead for good scoring from in close. Late in the period Rushmore stopped a breakaway to keep Moorestown ahead at 2-1 heading into the second period.

Moorestown completed its run through the double elimination tournament undefeated as they beat Holy Cross 7-1. A five goal third period blew the game open for Moorestown, and they will host the winner of the Cherokee Holy Cross game at the Igloo this Wednesday. Moorestown needs to win one more game, while there opponent must win two. After a scoreless first period, which Moorestown outshot Holy Cross 11-5 but could not get one past CJ Byrd, they jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Alec Nicolai and Tyler Woyshner scored goals three minutes apart early in the second period.
Cherokee led 3-1 with less than five minutes remaining, but Moorestown stormed back scoring four goals in the final four minutes to defeat Cherokee 5-3 and advance in the winner’s bracket and will meet Holy Cross on Monday night. Mike Eni had three goals for Moorestown. Herbie Hutchinson scored the only goal of the first period on the power play as Cherokee led 1-0.
In keeping with our tradition, SJIceHockey.com is pleased to announce our annual hockey awards given to the players we feel stood out. This year was more difficult than in the past as we had many players in all our categories, but after many discussions here are the selections:
Tyler Woyshner scored four goals and Mike Eni added a hat trick as Moorestown opened defense of its crown with a 9-4 win over Shawnee in playoff action at the Igloo. Shawnee led 3-2 early in the second period before Moorestown scored six consecutive goals to take control of the game in the third period. Robert Willwerth scored ninety seconds into the game as Shawnee led 1-0. We stayed that way until the final minute of the period; Woyshner tied the game at 1-1 with Alec Nicolai getting the assist. Then with twelve seconds left in the period, Nicolai gave Moorestown a 2-1 lead, but Shawnee scored the tying goal right before the buzzer as Gregory Nagy got credit for the goal.
Mike Eni scored three goals and Tyler Woyshner and Matt Olbrich added two goals each as Moorestown took care of Clearview 11-1 in SJHSIHL action played at Hollydell. Moorestown took away any thoughts of an upset putting up seven goals in the first period. Woyshner opened the scoring just seconds into the game and when Willie Sulpizio made it 2-0 just one minute into the game, it looked like it was going to be a long night for Clearview.
With the discussions until the wee hours of the morning, the SJHSIHL Junior-Senior Showcase, to be held at Hollydell on Friday February 5th has been announced. With the teams broken up into two teams, North and South, the following is how the two teams will be divided:
Moorestown scored three consecutive goals in the third period to snap a 3-3 to take a 6-3 lead and hold off the charging Williamstown Braves in winning 6-5 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Chris Carnivale and Tyler Woyshner led Moorestown with two goals each. Allan Haynes had a hat trick for the Braves. Haynes scored two goals in the opening stanza to give Williamstown a 2-1 lead, after Woyshner had scored a power play goal for Moorestown. Carnivale tied the game at 2-2 scoring on the power play at the eight minute mark.
Third period goals by Tyler Woyshner and Alec Nicolai keyed a furious rally for Moorestown as they came back to tie Cinnaminson 5-5 in SJHSIHL action played at the Igloo. Cinnaminson led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Anthony Ianuzzi and Eric McDowell, Moorestown would come back to tie early in the second period on goals by Alex Hashmi and Nicolai. Cinnaminson seemed to take control of the game midway through the period scoring three goals in a span of four minutes to take a 5-2 lead.
These games are always exciting, because you don't who is going to show up for either team. The Cherokee Chiefs and the Moorestown Quakers like to play each other feisty and hard and this game didn't let me down. After getting thumped by the Chiefs the first time they played this season, it looked as if Moorestown came to play this game.
