Moorestown Quakers Articles 2013-14
Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

Chris DeRose and John Yedman scored two goals each as Moorestown defeated Cherokee 7-3 to capture the first NJ/DE Flyers Cup. As they have done all season Moorestown ran 3 lines and got contributions from each line to wear down the Chiefs. Coach Ridge said later, ”This took a little sting away from losing the league Championship, but would have been better had Cherokee not been missing some key players, that said, it was a good way to end the season on a positive note and to win the inaugural NJ/DE Flyers Cup is an honor".
Eric Schwartz had three goals to lead Moorestown over Salesianum 5-2 in semi-final action in the NJ/DE Flyers Cup played at the Skate Zone on Monday night in Voorhees. Moorestown will have a rematch with rival Cherokee in the finals and will look to avenge their league championship loss. Moorestown led 2-0 after the opening period as Mike Katz scored at the nine minute mark and two minutes later with Salesianum down a man Schwartz connected on the power play for a 2-0 lead. Early in the second period after Salesianum cut the deficit to 2-1, Moorestown wasted little time in recapturing their two goal lead as Brian Santosuosso deflected a point shot by Tyler Tavormina for a 3-1 advantage.
Black Horse forward Kyle Frasier had three goals and two assists to lead the North All-Stars to a 12-4 win over the South All-Stars in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played at Voorhees. Mike Katz added two goals and one assist for the North. Katz opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but the South came back just over one minute later to tie the game at 1-1with Shawnee’s Alex Churchill getting the goal and Sean Burnham from Kingsway the assist. The North would score the next three goals, Frazier scored unassisted on a breakaway for a 2-1 lead, then late in the period goals by Moorestown’s John Yedman and St Joe’s Paul Petrongolo ninety second apart gave the North a 4-1 lead heading into the second period.
Balanced scoring was a strong point of Moorestown all season and last night was no exception as six different players scored to lead them to a 6-1 win over Clearview in Flyers Cup action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After scoring a goal just three minutes into the contest, David Shore picked a great time to get his first goal of the season as he made it 2-0 at the four minute mark. Early in the second period Nicholas Karelfors-Murphy deflected a pass from Alex Crowl for a 3-0 lead. Moorestown would make it 4-0 later in the period as Chris DeRose broke in with Mike Katz and DeRose scored and chased starter Mike Hughes in nets for Clearview.
Brian Miller proved why he’s the best player in the league, in the biggest game of the year, the Championship series tied at 1-1, he scored three goals as Cherokee hung on to beat Moorestown 4-3 before a standing room only crowd at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel last night. The win gave the Chiefs their fourth straight championship and first under Coach Scott McKay, who’s has been an assistant on the other 3 championship and has stood patiently waiting his turn. Moorestown jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over two minutes in as they capitalized on a 3-on-2 break and Chris DeRose scored his third of the playoffs for a 1-0 lead. Miller wasted no time in tying the game less than thirty seconds later with Tim Schirmer getting the assist.
Having just completed the first draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game and having posted the selections as they were happening, wanted to let you see the whole roster. The game will be played on Friday night March 7th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees at 9:30, if the time changes we will post in the forum.
Like they have all season Moorestown and Cherokee have battled tooth and nail and with their backs up against the wall, Moorestown responded with a 6-4 win over the Chiefs to force a third and deciding game to be played Thursday night at the Igloo at 8:00. Six different players scored for Moorestown as they got contributions from all lines, Timmy Ryan and Boomer Miller led Cherokee with two goals each. Mike Katz opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and Moorestown led 1-0. Cherokee would score two goals in a span of twenty seconds to take a 2-1 lead. After Ryan tied the game at 1-1, Boomer broke down the right side and after being tripped he shot the puck lying face down and his goal gave Cherokee a 2-1 lead after one period.
Having been silenced the last few games against Moorestown, Brian Miller exploded last night for three goals and three assists as Cherokee edged Moorestown 6-5 in the opening game of the best of three Championship series played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. John Yedman led Moorestown with two goals. The game was back and forth in scoring streaks, Moorestown scored the first two goals of the game, Yedman scored late in the first period for the 1-0 lead, a period in which Cherokee carried the play but failed to capitalize on three power play chances. Early in the second period Mike Katz made it 2-0 on a nice feed from Yedman just three minutes in.
With the playoffs winding down and another season coming to an end, here are some predictions on who might win their respective Titles: Tier I teams are already set-Moorestown and Cherokee. During the regular season Cherokee had a 2-1-1 edge, but Moorestown has won the last 2 in including a 5-4 win last Friday. The key will be containing Brian Miller, in the season opener Miller went off for 6 goals. Over the next four meetings he has been held to just one goal total, so he has Moorestown’s attention when he is on the ice. The teams are pretty even overall, offensively Cherokee averages about .50 goals more per game, but defensively Moorestown has a slight edge.
