Zachary Burkhardt stopped 20 shots as Washington Township eliminated Moorestown 2-0 in the SJHSIHL Varsity Playoffs. Township will now move on and face Clearview in the Championship round. Township must beat Clearview twice in order to win the title as the View has not suffered a loss in the double elimination tournament. Burkhardt continued his mastery over Moorestown, which was coming off a record setting performance in eliminating Cherokee on Monday night.

Moorestown established a league record by scoring nine goals in the second period and abruptly ending Cherokee’s season with a 10-4 win last night at the Skate Zone. Led by Chris DeRose with four goals and John Yedman with two, the Quakes had a second period for the ages. Some cynics will tell you that it’s the kiss of death to have a 2-0 lead, but that’s where the Chiefs stood after the first period on goals by Boomer Miller and Christian Katsanos, but the second period began with Moorestown on the power play and DeRose wasted no time scoring in the opening eighteen seconds to cut the lead to 2-1. DeRose would get his second power play goal just two minutes later and just like that we were tied at 2-2.

With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. Washington Township opened up the 2014-2015 Playoffs with a 2-0 win over Moorestown, Having gone 4-0 against Moorestown during the regular season, with 2 shutouts, goalie Zachary Burkhardt continued his mastery over the Quakes, but wasn’t really tested until the third period. Township took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period as Riley Griffith connected down low with Chris Cozzan and Brandon Balsama getting the assists. Late in the period Donovan Haslett out-hustled Moorestown goalie Dominic Romeo to the loose puck in the corner and fed Sam Strippoli in front of a wide open net and his goal at the end of the period made it 2-0.

Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.

Zachary Burkhardt stopped all 23 shots and Jarret Wharton scored twice as Washington Township defeated Moorestown 5-0 at the Igloo on Wednesday night. With the win Township clinched first place in the American Division and will play Moorestown in the first round of the double elimination tournament starting on February 9th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Moorestown controlled the opening five minutes and peppered Burkhardt but he stood strong and Township withstood the attack. Riley Griffith would score an unassisted goal at the six minute mark for the 1-0 lead. Chris Cozzan would make it 2-0 scoring a power play goal with less than two minutes left in the period.

Chris DeRose scored four goals as Moorestown defeated Cherokee 6-3 in American division action played at the Skate Zone. Boomer Miller led Cherokee with two goals. The Chiefs led 2-0 midway through the first period on goals by Miller on the power play and Kyle Horner. DeRose got his first of the night in the last minute of the period scoring on a break. Moorestown got an early goal in the second period from Alex Crowl, his third of the year and we were tied at 2-2.

For the second consecutive year, a live draft was held to select the teams for the upcoming Junior Senior Showcase game to be held Friday, February 6th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Team Giroux was selected by Cherokee Coach McKay and Riverfront Coach D’Amato and Team Simmonds were selected by Washington Township Coach Glick and EEW Coach Pontonio. Team Giroux won the coin toss and selected Boomer Miller, Team Simmonds went with Cris Cozzan. Here are the rest of the players selected by team:

The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!

Kyle Horner scored with fourteen seconds left in the game, on the power play as Cherokee edged Moorestown 4-3 in American division action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Boomer Miller led the Cherokee offense with a hat trick. Miller got things going for Cherokee scoring a short-handed goal late in the period. John Yedman tied the score at 1-1 with his 15th goal of the season with just fourteen seconds left in the period.
