Moorestown Quakers Articles 2016-17

While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

Moorestown rode the play of Griffin Conroy into the championship game of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup, but could not withstand the offensive onslaught from Salesianum as the Sallies defeated Moorestown 7-0 to become the first Delaware team in four years to win the Championship. Salesianum outshot Moorestown 36-12 and took control of the game in the first period scoring four goals. Fisher Sellers and Zach Swift scored two goals each for Salesianum, with Swift being named the tournament MVP.

Griffin Conroy stopped all 36 shots to lead Moorestown to a 3-0 victory over Delaware Military Academy and a spot in the finals against Salesianum on Friday night at Voorhees. Brandon Eberly scored the only goal Griffin would need, midway through the first period with Luke Dobbs getting the assist. DMA would have consecutive power play opportunities late in the period but Griffin kept them off the board.

Christian Romeo scored with fourteen seconds left in regulation to snap a 4-4 game and give Moorestown a 5-4 win over Cherokee in a Flyers Cup game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The two rivals played back and forth all night, and it felt like we were going overtime until Romeo’s heroics. Jake Frankenfield gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead going end-to-end and lifting a backhander into the top shelf. That lead lasted all of thirty nine seconds as Sean Humes would tie the game at 1-1 for the Quakes. Early in the second period Luke Dobbs gave Moorestown a 2-1 lead but right after the faceoff Cherokee would get the equalizer as Trevor Ligeikis scored down low and we were knotted at 2-2.

The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Tommy Papa and Ethan Chase each had a hat trick as Cherry Hill East JVA defeated Moorestown JVA 8-2 in playoff action played in Voorhees. Cherry Hill took control with a four goal first period and never looked back. Goals by Chase, Papa and two from Ben Snyder gave East a 4-0 lead. Chase and Papa would connect early in the second period and the lead was 6-0.

Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:

Hunter Ray scored thirty three seconds into overtime as Cherokee defeated Moorestown 5-4 and advanced to the finals to face Eastern. The loss eliminated Moorestown from the double elimination tournament. The Chiefs led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Cody Sherman and Jake Kelley after Bryan Bielawski had given Moorestown a 1-0 lead. Moorestown took a 3-1 lead early in the second period as they capitalized on a two-man advantage, scoring twice with Charlie Banquier getting the tying goal and Brandon Eberly putting them ahead 3-2.

Matt Marzo scored four goals as Moorestown defeated Williamstown 7-2 in JVA action played at Skate Zone in Voorhees. After Dennis Campbell gave Williamstown a 1-0 lead at the eight minute mark, just over one minute later Sean Humes would tie the game at 1-1. Goals by Marzo and Ryler Radziemski less than two minutes apart late in the period gave the Quakes a 3-1 lead after one.

Maxim Kuznetsov had four goals and Connor Riley had four assists as Eastern defeated Moorestown 6-3 and advanced to the Championship round in the SJHSHL double elimination Tournament. The Vikings built a 4-0 lead through two periods before Moorestown would mount a third period comeback. Joe Arlotta gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game. We would stay that way until less than five minutes left in the period when James McGrath would score just his second goal of the season and the lead was 2-0. Kuznetsov as it turned out would score the next four for the Vikings. His first coming just thirty seconds after McGrath’s goal and the lead was 3-0 after one.
