In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey, we are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 award winners. We had many players that had a standout year which made it difficult to narrow down and in one category we actually picked two players to share the honors. Congratulations to all.  The presentations will be prior to game 1 of the Championship round at Voorhees.

Thomas Rockey snapped a 1-1 tie with just less than five minutes left in regulation as Clearview defeated St Joe’s 2-1 in the playoff opener for both clubs. Rockey, who split his time on varsity and the JVB team this season, went top shelf from the slot for the game winner to beat Michael Neal who stopped 33 shots and kept Clearview off the board on five power play opportunities. Jason Baselice gave St Joe’s a 1-0 lead after a scoreless first period.

Shawnee is making its first appearance in recent memory and Moorestown finds itself the top seed after a 15-1-2 season. The games are scheduled to be played starting on March 12th as Cherokee will host DMA at 8:45 at Voorhees Skate Zone. Moorestown will begin play on Tuesday March 13th at Voorhees at 7:00. Please check back for the complete schedule, to be posted in the Forum. The 5th annual NJ/DE Flyers cup teams have been selected and here are the rankings...

Kyle Peters scored one minute into the overtime period as Team Simmonds rallied from a three goal deficit to defeat Team Giroux 9-8 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Max Kuznetsov led Team Giroux with six goals. Dominic Garrozzo had three goals and four assists and Kyle Peters added a hat trick for Team Simmonds. Luke Dobbs opened the scoring giving Team Giroux the early 1-0 lead. Dennis Campbell tied the game at 1-1 at the five minute mark.

Gage Grist scored twice, including the game tying goal late in the second period as Mainland rallied from a two goal deficit to earn tie with St Joe’s at 4-4. Kevin Glass led St Joe’s with a hat trick. St Joe’s took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game as Joseph Bryant scored his 6th of the season. Mainland would tie the game at 1-1 just less than three minutes later with Anthony Santa Maria getting his 18th of the season. Glass would score the next three goals in a span of about five minutes to give St Joe’s a 4-1 lead.

The 2017-2018 SJHSHL draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game was conducted on Tuesday night as the coaches for Team Simmonds and Team Giroux gathered to make their selections. Team Giroux, who will be coached by Daryl Sporer from Moorestown and assisted by Scott Busler from Cherry Hill East won the toss and selected Max Kuznetsov from Eastern with their first pick. Team Simmonds who will be coached by Scott McKay from Cherokee and assisted by John Francis from Kingsway selected Dominic Garrozzo from Washington Township. Cherry Hill East scored three goals in the second period and Luke Martini stopped all 16 shots as Cherry Hill East defeated St Joe’s 3-0 in Tier II action in Voorhees. With this being senior night East wanted to jump out early but three penalties, had them short-handed and gave St Joe’s an opportunity to get an early lead but Martini was strong in nets and despite a two man advantage seventy five seconds, St Joe’s failed to capitalize and we were scoreless after one period.

The nominees for the 2017-2018 Junior/Senior Showcase game have been released. The game will be played on Wednesday, February 7th at the Voorhees Skate Zone at 7:05. Tickets are $5. Head coach from Moorestown will team with head coach from Cherry Hill East to oppose head coach from Cherokee who will team with head coach from Kingsway. We will conduct a live draft next week-date and time to be announced so stay tuned. Here are your 2017-2018 nominees...

Anthony Carite scored his team high 12th goal of the season with just thirty seven seconds left in the game as St Joe’s upset first place Cherry Hill East 2-1 in game action played at Hollydell. The game had all the intensity of a playoff elimination game as both teams played defense first. St Joe’s had the better opportunities with four straight power plays over two periods, including a 2 man advantage for sixty two seconds but failed to capitalize. Both goalies were outstanding with Michael Neal stopping 30 shots for St. Joe’s and Luke Martini stopping 25.

St Joe’s scored two third period goals to salvage a 4-4 tie against Clearview in Tier II action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Nick Jervas got the game’s first goal scoring on the power play to give St. Joe’s a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Colin Hughes would get the equalizer for Clearview scoring his 14th of the season. Kevin Glass would score an unassisted goal at the nine minute mark to give St. Joe’s a 2-1 lead. But goals by Brendan Bainbridge and Derek McKinley fifteen seconds apart would give the View a 3-2 lead after one period.
