Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

With the playoffs winding down and another season coming to an end, here are some predictions on who might win their respective Titles: Tier I teams are already set-Moorestown and Cherokee. During the regular season Cherokee had a 2-1-1 edge, but Moorestown has won the last 2 in including a 5-4 win last Friday. The key will be containing Brian Miller, in the season opener Miller went off for 6 goals. Over the next four meetings he has been held to just one goal total, so he has Moorestown’s attention when he is on the ice. The teams are pretty even overall, offensively Cherokee averages about .50 goals more per game, but defensively Moorestown has a slight edge.

John Martino scored three goals, including two in the third period as Cherokee defeated Washington Township 4-0 to open defense of their SJHSIHL title last night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Jimmy Witkoski stopped all 25 shots for the win. Martino scored the lone goal of the opening period as his shot found the corner on the long side for a 1-0 lead. Township, playing under former head coach Mike Glick played a very strong game defensively and it was obvious that shutting down Brian Miller, the league’s leading scorer, was the top priority and that strategy worked. Cherokee however has other offensive weapons and Martino stepped up in this game.
