Washington Township scored two power play goals and killed off a two man advantage in the third period as they defeated Eastern 4-1 and advanced to the semi-finals in the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. Jeff Horner scored the only goal of the first period as he buried a shot under the crossbar on a feed from Jarret Strickon at the six minute mark of the first period. Eastern would tie the game early in the second period on a goal by Connor Riley. As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.
Boomer Miller score with less than three minutes left in the first overtime as Cherokee defeated Washington Township 5-4 before a standing room only crowd at Hollydell to capture the Tier I title. Township led throughout the game as they capitalized on the power play, scoring twice. Mario Leone would score the first of his two on the night midway through the first period with both teams down a man; Jarret Strickon getting the assist and Township led 1-0. Early in the second period Donovan Haslett set-up Leone for his second of the night and Township enjoyed a 2-0 lead. Moments later Jeremy Ambrose made a nice play along the boards to keep the puck in and found Sam Libetti in front and the lead was down to 2-1.
Sam Libetti had a natural hat trick as Cherokee defeated Washington Township 6-2 to force a deciding game in the SJHSHL double elimination tournament. The Chiefs jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Boomer Miller and Anthony Salvatore. Township would bounce back in the second period as Jared Mara and Joe Crincoli would score minutes apart to tie the game at 2-2. With about four minutes left in the period Jeremy Ambrose made a great cross-ice pass to Libetti who banged home his first of three on the night and the Chiefs had the lead for good at 3-2. Libetti and Ambrose would hook up again on their next shift and the lead was 4-2 after two periods.
The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. Here are the teams nominated along with their seeding:
AJ Colella stopped 32 shots and Donovan Haslett scored twice as Washington Township defeated Clearview 4-2 and will now move onto the championship round with a chance to defend their title. Clearview jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Anthony Dellerose and Jake Sholders in the first six minutes of the game, Colella would shut the door the rest of the way as he saved his best performance for tonight. Eric Sailor picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season, it came with just three minutes left in the period and got Township on the board and gave them momentum heading into the second period.
Donovan Haslett scored a short-handed goal with less than three minutes left in the game as Washington Township defeated Moorestown 4-3 in the playoff opener for both teams. Joe Crincoli led Township with two goals, Brandon Eberly scored twice for Moorestown. Crincoli scored the lone goal of the first period, this one coming at the seven minute mark as Township took a 1-0 lead into the second period. Early in the period Luke Dobbs would tie the game at 1-1 for Moorestown. Township would get goals from Crincoli and Jarret Strickon on the power play to take a 3-1 lead. The goals came less than two minutes apart as Township carried the two goal lead into the third period.
Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.
The SJHSHL will hold the Junior/Senior Showcase game this Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30PM at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Admission is $5. The live draft was conducted last Thursday and 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies were selected for each team. Also 3 alternates were selected in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. So please come out and support these players. Here are the rosters of the two teams:
Dominic Romeo stopped 18 shots and Moorestown special teams accounted for three goals as they defeated Washington Township 4-0 in Tier I action at the Skate Zone. After a scoreless first period, where Moorestown failed to capitalize on a two man advantage and Township failed on its two power play opportunities, Robert Wildish would score his fourth goal of the season late in the second period to put Moorestown up 1-0. Brandon Eberly would score a power play goal early in the third period to make it 2-0.
