While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

Six different players scored goals and Michael Neal stopped 25 shots as Black Horse defeated Williamstown 6-2 to capture the Tier I B championship at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Black Horse jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Zach Faust, Dante Riccelli and Christian Corsaro. Early in the second period Williamstown would get on the board as Steve Poulin would score to cut the lead to 3-1. The Braves would have four opportunities on the power play in the period, but Neal kept them off the board. Jeff Leap put home a rebound of a Matt Meldrum shot to give Black Horse a 4-1 lead after two.
The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Here's the full list and seeding for this year's Flyers Cup.
Zachary Faust had a hat trick and Matthew Meldrum added two goals as Black Horse avoided elimination with a 6-1 win over Williamstown. The loss was the first for the Braves and the two teams will meet again for the Tier I B title. Williamstown would take a 1-0 lead as Dennis Campbell scored in the opening three minutes. Goals by Faust and Jeff Leap four minutes apart gave Black Horse the lead for good at 2-1. Faust would score a power play goal midway through the second period and Meldrum would get his first of the night late in the period and the lead was 4-1 after two.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:
Matt Marzo scored four goals as Moorestown defeated Williamstown 7-2 in JVA action played at Skate Zone in Voorhees. After Dennis Campbell gave Williamstown a 1-0 lead at the eight minute mark, just over one minute later Sean Humes would tie the game at 1-1. Goals by Marzo and Ryler Radziemski less than two minutes apart late in the period gave the Quakes a 3-1 lead after one.
Enrique Espinoza broke a 1-1 game with just over one minute left in regulation as Williamstown defeated Kingsway 2-1 in the opening round of the playoffs played at Voorhees on Monday night. Mike Moss scored the only goal of the first period to give Kingsway a 1-0 lead. We stayed that way until midway through the third period when Justin Fortuna would get the tying goal for the Braves with Anthony Ianella getting the assist. It appeared we would be headed for overtime until Espinoza got the game winner with Drew Murtha getting the assist.
Senior night at Hollydell produced a large crowd for Clearview as they rallied from a 4-2 deficit to beat Williamstown 7-5 on Friday night. Anthony Dellerose and Matt Manzo led the offense scoring two goals each, Drew Murtha and Justin Fortuna scored twice for Williamstown. Joey Freda gave the View a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but Murtha would get the equalizer at the nine minute mark. Manzo would give the View a 2-1 lead with just over three minutes left as Hunter Tamburro won the draw right back to Manzo. Just over two minutes later Fortuna would get the first of his two on the night as Steve Poulin intercepted a clearing pass and found Fortuna down low for a tap-in goal and we were tied at 2-2 after one.
Mike Moss broke a 2-2 game with ten minutes left in the game as Team Simmonds edged Team Giroux 3-2 in last night’s Junior/Senior Showcase game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having participated in the last few drafts Coach McKay has never won in this format, and while he wouldn’t admit that it bothered him, I got to believe that the success he has enjoyed over the last 8 years, not winning this game was probably bothering him to a degree. Trailing 2-0 on goals by Kevin Troy of St Joe’s and Zachary Faust of Black Horse, Team Simmonds would get a late goal in the period as Cody Charyk from Shawnee would score with Moss and Vinny Salerno getting the assists.
Trailing 4-2 after two periods, Black Horse scored four third period goals and hung on to defeat Williamstown 6-5 as Zachary Faust scored four goals to make sure senior night was a success for Black Horse. The four goals give Faust a league high of 43 on the season and he has surpassed 100 points for his 3 year career. Faust scored the first two goals of the game as Black Horse led 2-0 with just over five minutes left in the period. Dennis Campbell would connect on the power play in the final minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Drew Murtha would take over the second period as he would score a natural hat trick to give the Braves a 4-2 lead. First he scored on a breakaway four minutes into the period.
