Joseph Bene scored two third period goals, his 18th and 19th on the season to lead Kingsway to a 3-1 win over Williamstown in the first game of 2017 for both clubs. Williamstown took a 1-0 lead as Jesse Cave ripped one home from the slot to beat goalie Jacob Brown. That was all Brown would give up as he improved to 5-2 on the season and saw his GAA drop to 3.86. Late in the second period Mike Moss would tie the game at 1-1 scoring his 21st on a breakaway.
The list of nominees from each SJHSHL team has been announced for the Junior/Senior Showcase game to be played on January 31st at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Each team will have 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In addition, 3 alternates will be chosen in the event a player selected cannot make the game. The league will conduct a live draft streamed on SJIceHockey.com at a date to be announced. Here are the nominees:
Drew Murtha scored twice as Williamstown defeated Shawnee 4-1 in SJHSHL action in the final Friday night game at Hollydell for 2016. Murtha scored the only goal of the first period on a feed from Dennis Campbell late in the period as he banked the puck off the boards to send Murtha in all alone to make it 1-0. Early in the second period Murtha would connect on the power play, again from Campbell and the lead was 2-0. Ian Engel kept Shawnee off the board making several big saves down low.
Williamstown JVA launched 43 shots and scored five times as they defeated Clearview JVA 5-4 at Pennsauken Skate Zone. Dennis Campbell led the offense with two goals; Nathan Smith had a hat trick for Clearview. The game was tied at 2-2 after one period with Smith and Nick Cicotasto scoring for Clearview and Tyler Spear and Ryan Shannon getting the Braves goals.
Dan Taylor scored two goals as Riverfront defeated Williamstown 3-2 in SJHSHL action played at Hollydell. Williamstown can look back on their failure on the power play tonight as they went 0-6, which included a two-man advantage for a full two minutes late in the second period and they failed to capitalize. Jake Elliott would put the Braves up 1-0 scoring his first varsity goal of the season midway through the first period. In the opening minute of the second period Taylor would tie the game on a breakaway for Riverfront. Patrick Willever would get his first of the season at the nine minute mark and Riverfront led 2-1.
Zachary Faust scored five goals as Black Horse defeated Williamstown 6-1 to remain undefeated on the season at 10-0. Justin Fortuna gave Williamstown a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, but two goals by Faust in a twenty six second span gave Black Horse the lead for good at 2-1 after one period. Black Horse would make it 3-1 at the seven minute mark of the second period, Faust getting his third and it was just 3-1 after two periods. Faust however would break the game open early in the third, scoring two goals again on the same shift, this time nine seconds apart and suddenly it was 5-1.
Williamstown jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period on their way to an 11-1 rout of Middle Township. With the win the Braves improved to 6-3 on the season. Dennis Campbell, Drew Murtha and Justin Fortuna each scored two goals and Enrique Espinosa added a goal and four assists as eleven different players recorded at least one point. Campbell opened the scoring at the six minute mark and five minutes later Tyler Spear would get his second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead. Goals by Fortuna and Kehrik McKeon, his first varsity goal of the year, had the lead to 4-0.
Nate Lowry scored his first two varsity goals and Dennis Campbell and Steve Poulin also scored twice as Williamstown continued its winning ways with a 9-3 victory over Lower Cape May. The win was the third on a row for the Braves and improved their record to 5-3. Brandon Rota opened the scoring for Williamstown just over two minutes into the game. Lowry made it 2-0 just over one minute later as the Braves kept the pressure on offensively as they had a season high 62 shots. Joshua Pollard would get his first goal of the season with just over five minutes left in the period for a 3-0 lead. LCM would get a late goal from Ryan Hill to cut the deficit to 3-1 after one period.
