Second Annual Wings of Steel Golf Outing
The 2nd annual Wings of Steel golf outing is being held at Ramblewood Country Club on Friday April 24th. Registration begins at 11:00am and tee time is set for 12:30pm. This is a best-ball golf outing. For those unfamiliar with sled hockey, and in particular Wings of Steel, they are a bunch of kids who have either a physical or mental impairment and play sled hockey because they cannot participate in other youth sports. Many of the boys that play hockey have seen these guys practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Unlike other kids they do not have the luxury of skating or doing normal stuff we take for granted. Some are in wheelchairs, others have crutches, but none of them use their disability as a crutch.
They enjoy their time on the ice, be it at practice, which is every Thursday or in a game. They just lost in their league’s championship game and although some took it harder than others, they were back at practice this week, joking and laughing. Tom Brake coaches the team along with assistants Paul Valentine and Brian Shaw. South Jersey referee Norm Jones, runs the practice session on Thursday. Tom put this team together back in 2001 and we at sjsports did a story back in 2002 on the team. The golf outing along with other fund raisers helps pay for the ice time, which is very expensive and the construction of the sleds which can cost upwards of $650.
Obviously with the economy being what it is, the Golf Outing Committee kept the price of the outing at $100/golfer, which includes lunch and dinner as well. Should you not be a golfer or hacker, please try and donate anything you can, money gift cards, hockey equipment, no matter what the value all donations are appreciated. Please see the flier on this site.
