Cherokee fresh off winning the SJHSIHL Championship continued their streak into the Flyers Cup reaching the semi-finals where they faced top ranked Council Rock South. That’s where the run ended as Council Rock South won 3-1 and advances to the finals against CB East.
After a scoreless first period, Cherokee took a 1-0 lead early in the second as Jason Spieker scored with Casey Forte and Brandon Gidel getting the assists. Council Rock responded thirty seconds later as Nick Keck got the equalizer. Later in the period with a chance to take the lead on the power play, Cherokee allowed a short-handed goal to Patrick Grilli with just over four minutes left and Council Rock took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Cherokee was faced with the task of killing 3 straight penalties from the ten minute mark to the four minute mark, and was successful killing two, but Tom Kapania gave Council Rock some breathing room as he scored a power play goal with about eight minutes left. Despite firing 13 shots on net Cherokee did not score and their run was over. The Chiefs proved that their #12 seeding was a joke and used that lack of respect to carry them far.
