Cherokee built a 4-0 lead early into the third period and had to hold off a hard charging Moorestown team as the Chiefs opened defense of their title with a 4-3 win over the Quakes in a rare Wednesday night contest at Voorhees. Sam Libetti led the Chiefs offense with two goals. Colin Devine and Jeremy Ambrose scored first period goals for Cherokee just over one minute apart as the Chiefs led 2-0 after one period. Libetti scored the only goal of the second period on a feed from Ambrose and the Chiefs took a 3-0 lead into the third period.
Libetti would make it 4-0 in the opening minute and Cherokee seemed to be in control, but two goals by Luke Dobbs, less than one minute apart had the Quakes to within 4-2 and charging. Chief goalie Andrew Lavdas would not allow another goal until the final minute of the game when Christian Romeo scored, but the Chiefs hung on for the 4-3 win.
