Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

There were a few bumps along the way, putting this together in a matter of weeks that’s to be expected, but next year we will be better. A few incidents that happened were unfortunate and not tolerated and handled with an appropriate response. In addition to the Trophy presented last night to Moorestown there were a few other awards presented by former Flyer great Brian Propp. Eric Schwartz received the MVP Trophy for his play in the tournament. John Martino of Cherokee received an award for having the most points. Liam Ridge and Rich Brussco were the defensive selections for the All-Tournament team. Along with Schwartz and Martino at forwards and Moorestown goalie Bob Pappotto was named top goalie. Congratulations to Moorestown players, Coach Ridge and his staff on doing something no one else can brag about, winning the first ever NJ/DE Flyers Cup!!
